What Makes a Quality Outdoor Cushion?

At first glance, most outdoor cushions look relatively similar.

Fabric on the outside. Filling on the inside. Maybe a zipper along the back.

But spend a season actually living with them and the differences become much easier to see.

A quality outdoor cushion needs to do several things well at the same time. It should be comfortable enough that you genuinely want to sit on it. Supportive enough to maintain its shape. Durable enough for everyday use. Made from fabric that can handle sunlight and the realities of outdoor living. And constructed well enough that seams, zippers, and inserts hold up over time.

At Brush Valley Cushion Co., we think of an outdoor cushion as a system. The fabric, insert, construction, dimensions, and care all work together.

Here's what we believe you should look for when choosing outdoor cushions.

1. Start With the Fabric

The fabric is the most visible part of an outdoor cushion, but color shouldn't be the only consideration.

Outdoor fabric has a demanding job.

Depending on where you live and where your furniture is located, your cushions may encounter direct sunlight, heat, humidity, pollen, dirt, food, pets, children, sunscreen, rain, and the occasional spilled glass of wine.

A fabric designed primarily for indoor use isn't made for that environment.

Quality outdoor fabrics are specifically engineered to perform better under these conditions. When comparing cushions, look for fabrics designed for outdoor applications with strong resistance to fading and everyday exposure.

This is one of the primary reasons we use Sunbrella® performance fabrics for Brush Valley cushions.

Sunbrella has become one of the most recognized names in outdoor textiles because its fabrics combine performance with the look and feel people actually want in their homes.

That distinction matters.

Your outdoor cushions shouldn't feel like camping equipment simply because they're durable.

2. Fade Resistance Matters More Than You Might Think

Sunlight is one of the biggest challenges facing outdoor textiles.

A beautiful cushion can quickly lose its appeal when its original color begins to fade unevenly.

This is particularly noticeable when cushions aren't exposed to sunlight equally. One side of a porch might receive significantly more sun than another, or part of a cushion may remain shaded by a pillow while another portion receives hours of direct light.

High-quality outdoor performance fabrics are designed with this reality in mind.

Sunbrella fabrics, for example, are made using solution-dyed acrylic fibers. Rather than applying color primarily to the surface of the fiber, the pigment is incorporated into the fiber itself.

A simple way to think about it is the difference between a radish and a carrot.

Cut into a radish and you'll find that most of the color is concentrated on the outside.

Cut into a carrot and the color continues all the way through.

That same basic idea helps explain why solution-dyed fabrics are so well suited to outdoor environments.

3. What's Inside the Cushion Is Just as Important

Fabric gets most of the attention because it's what you see.

But the cushion insert determines much of what you actually feel.

Low-quality cushion filling can flatten, shift, clump, or lose its shape. A cushion that initially looks thick and comfortable may feel surprisingly different after regular use.

For seat cushions, you want an insert that provides both support and loft.

Too soft and you'll sink through the cushion.

Too firm and your beautiful swing bed starts feeling more like a bench.

The goal is a comfortable middle ground: enough structure to support the body while still creating that deep, relaxed feeling people expect from an outdoor lounge cushion.

At Brush Valley, our seat cushions use a densified fiber core wrapped with polyester batting. The combination helps create structure while maintaining the full, inviting appearance we want from a swing bed cushion.

4. Cushion Thickness Makes a Difference

One of the easiest ways manufacturers can reduce the cost of an outdoor cushion is simply to use less material.

That often means thinner cushions.

For occasional dining chairs, a relatively thin cushion may be perfectly appropriate. But a swing bed or deep outdoor seating area serves a very different purpose.

These are places designed for lounging.

A substantial seat cushion creates both visual weight and physical comfort. It helps transform a wooden swing bed frame into something that feels much closer to an outdoor sofa or daybed.

Our swing bed seat cushions are 6 inches thick for precisely this reason.

The goal isn't simply to cover the seat.

It's to create somewhere you want to stay.

5. Good Back Cushions Need Loft

Seat cushions provide support.

Back cushions create much of the comfort.

A good outdoor back cushion should have enough filling to feel substantial without becoming stiff. When you lean against it, it should support you while still allowing you to settle in.

Size matters here too.

Back cushions that are too small can leave uncomfortable gaps and make a large swing bed look unfinished. Cushions with the right height and width create a fuller, more intentional appearance while providing better support.

This becomes particularly important with swing beds because the seating area is much deeper than a traditional porch swing.

A generously sized back cushion helps bridge that depth and creates a much more comfortable lounging position.

6. Don't Overlook the Bolsters

Bolsters might look decorative, but on a swing bed they're remarkably functional.

A swing bed is wider and deeper than conventional seating. Without bolsters, the ends of the swing can feel unfinished or awkward when you're trying to curl up, lean sideways, or stretch out.

A well-proportioned bolster fills that space.

It can become an armrest, headrest, back support, or pillow depending on how you're using the swing.

That's why the size of a bolster should correspond to the size of the cushion set rather than simply using the same small decorative bolster for every swing.

On a thoughtfully designed cushion set, every component should have a purpose.

7. Look Closely at the Construction

Some of the most important signs of cushion quality aren't particularly glamorous.

They're things like:

  • Straight, secure seams

  • Consistent stitching

  • Well-installed zippers

  • Properly fitted covers

  • Thoughtfully constructed corners

  • Evenly distributed filling

  • Accurate dimensions

These details determine how a cushion looks after months and years of use.

Poor construction tends to reveal itself slowly. Seams begin to pull. Fabric twists around the insert. Corners collapse. Zippers become difficult to operate.

Good construction is often less noticeable.

Everything simply continues to work.

8. Removable Covers Make Outdoor Living Easier

Outdoor cushions will eventually need to be cleaned.

That's not a defect. It's simply part of living outside.

Pollen settles. Dust blows in. Someone spills something. A bird makes an unfortunate decision.

Being able to remove the cushion cover makes regular cleaning considerably easier.

That's why we consider a removable, zippered cover an important feature in a premium outdoor cushion.

The easier your cushions are to maintain, the more likely you are to take care of them—and proper care plays a significant role in how long outdoor cushions last.

9. "Outdoor" Doesn't Mean Maintenance-Free

This may be one of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor cushions.

No outdoor cushion is completely immune to the environment.

Even premium outdoor fabrics benefit from sensible care.

Moisture is particularly important.

Mold and mildew require the right conditions to grow, and prolonged dampness can create those conditions on almost any outdoor surface. Cushions should be allowed to dry thoroughly after becoming wet, and keeping them covered or stored during extended periods of rain can help protect them.

Good airflow matters too.

If cushions remain wet and compressed against another surface for extended periods, moisture can become trapped.

The best outdoor cushions make maintenance easier.

They don't eliminate the need for it.

10. Proper Fit Is Part of Quality

You can buy an exceptionally well-made cushion and still be disappointed if it doesn't fit your furniture properly.

This is particularly important with swing beds.

A cushion that's several inches too narrow can slide around and leave awkward gaps. A cushion that's too deep may extend beyond the frame. Back cushions that are too large can consume valuable seating depth.

Before purchasing cushions, measure the actual usable seating area of your swing, rather than relying exclusively on terms such as "twin," "full," or "crib."

Furniture dimensions aren't always standardized.

Measure the width and depth of the area where the seat cushion will actually sit, then compare those measurements carefully with the dimensions provided by the cushion manufacturer.

A few minutes with a tape measure can prevent a very expensive mistake.

11. Outdoor Cushions Should Be Designed as a Set

One of the things we pay particular attention to at Brush Valley is proportion.

A cushion set shouldn't look like several unrelated pillows happened to land on the same piece of furniture.

The seat cushion, back cushions, bolsters, and throw pillows should work together.

On a swing bed, this means considering the relationship between:

Seat depth + back cushion thickness + bolster size + overall frame dimensions.

When those proportions are right, the entire swing feels balanced.

It's one of those details that's difficult to identify when it's done well—but immediately noticeable when it isn't.

12. Consider Where and How the Cushions Are Made

Manufacturing matters.

Cushions that are designed primarily to hit the lowest possible retail price will inevitably involve compromises somewhere—whether that's fabric, filling, construction, dimensions, or quality control.

That doesn't mean the most expensive cushion is automatically the best.

It means it's worth understanding what you're actually paying for.

Ask where the cushions are made.

Look for specific information about materials.

See whether the company identifies the fabric manufacturer rather than simply saying "outdoor fabric."

Look at the insert construction.

Check the dimensions.

Read the care instructions.

Companies making high-quality products should be able to tell you what's inside them.

At Brush Valley, our cushions are made in Pennsylvania using genuine Sunbrella performance fabrics and thoughtfully selected cushion materials.

We want customers to know what they're buying.

13. Quality Is Also About How Long You Want to Own Something

There will always be inexpensive outdoor cushions available.

And sometimes inexpensive is exactly what someone needs.

But if you're creating an outdoor space you plan to use for years, it's worth considering the total life of the product rather than simply the initial price.

Replacing inexpensive cushions repeatedly isn't necessarily inexpensive in the long run.

More importantly, it's frustrating.

We prefer the philosophy of buying better and caring for what you own.

Choose materials designed for the environment.

Choose construction designed for regular use.

Keep cushions clean.

Let them dry.

Protect them during severe weather.

Store them appropriately during the off-season when necessary.

Quality materials combined with good care can make an enormous difference.

So, What Makes a Great Outdoor Cushion?

Ultimately, a quality outdoor cushion isn't defined by one feature.

It's the combination of:

Performance fabric.
Quality filling.
Generous proportions.
Thoughtful construction.
Proper fit.
Good craftsmanship.
And appropriate care.

Take away any one of those elements and the cushion may still look beautiful when it arrives.

The real test comes later.

How does it feel after you've spent an entire afternoon reading on it?

Does it maintain its shape?

Can you clean it?

Does the fabric still look beautiful?

Do you find yourself choosing that seat again and again?

That's how we think quality should be measured.

Because the best outdoor cushion isn't simply the one that looks good in a photograph.

It's the one that makes you want to spend more of your life outside.
